Your family is about to grow and you would love to capture this special moment and make memories that will last a lifetime and bring joy to you and your family every time you look back on them, I would love to be your photographer!

Having a maternity photography session is an amazing way to celebrate your life as it is and welcome all the changes that will come with the arrival of your little bundle of joy.

Imagine how much your children, as adults, will love to look back on your pregnancy photos and see how much they were loved and expected even before they were born.

When to book your maternity photography session?

The best time for your session depends on the size of your bump basically, it can vary from one woman to another, but generally speaking somewhere between 28 and 34 weeks is a good time. You want to have a large enough, easily noticeable bump but you don't want to wait too long and feel uncomfortable in the photos.

If this is your first pregnancy, it will probably take a little longer for you to start showing, so between 32 and 34 weeks could be a good window and if this isn't your first, chances are people will be able to tell you are expecting a lot sooner, so in this case between 28 and 31 weeks could be your window. But most importantly, pay attention at your body changes and decide when you think the best time for you.

Where to have your maternity photo session?

I usually suggest my clients to have their photos taken in their home or at a location they love, it could be a park, a beach, a special place where the couple first met, in town, anywhere that would help tell a the story of your family.

You might chose your home to document the place you lived before your children arrived if you have plans to move to another house or to make big renovations in the future. Or you might go for that park that you love to go on long walks every weekend. This family in the photo chose Ardgillan Castle and Gardens, one of the most beautiful Dublin’s regional parks known for its magnificent views of the coastline. It's really up to you and where you think will make the most meaningful memories.

What to wear for a maternity photo session?

There is a lot to consider when it comes to picking outfits for you and your family for your maternity session but the most important thing is: I want to see the real you! I want to see a little bit of your personality on what you are wearing, I want you to feel pretty and comfortable (and your family members too!).

Choose an outfit that will show off your bump:

It can be a dress that is tight up top and flowy from the top of your belly, maxi dresses work really well (just make sure it is not too long because you don't want to trip on it) and midis are nice too. I would probably avoid short dresses. If it is a bit chilly on the day, you can pair it with a cardigan and boots.

Denim and cardigan are also a great option and could be more appropriate depending on the time of the year and weather. Paired with a jacket if really cold, hats, gloves and scarves.

Colours to go for and to avoid:

I personally love neutrals, beige, brown, grey, white, denim are my favourites but then again, I want to see you wearing your favourite colours! So if you love green, blue or pink, go for them! I would avoid really bright colours though, they can be too distracting. And would also avoid an all black outfit because it wouldn't help show off your bump.

Logos, patterns, prints and stripes:

I would avoid brand logos, busy patterns and prints. Ditsy floral and tiny graphic patterns photograph well as long as the colours are not clashing. Stripes can work too.

Again, if you absolutely love an animal print dress you bought and you would like to wear it, it's totally fine!

Solids are always a good option!

Partner and children:

Having your family all coordinating, not matching, is the goal. Mixing your favourite colour with neutrals is a good way to start. I really like the way this family in the photos coordinated their outfits for example.
